Question
I noticed about a week ago she was squinting her right eye. Then just in the last few days she isn't even really opening it & today I saw something that looked like blood but it wasn't, I'm not sure what it was but it also seemed to be tearing a lot unless it was a clear puss fluid. Can u help me with telling me what is wrong & do I need to get her into the vet immediately? Or is this something that is easily treated at home? By the way she is a hairless rat, I don't know if that makes a difference.

Thank u & i hope to hear from u soon!

Answer

Sounds like it is irritated.  I dont think it was blood, sounds like porphyrin discharge. Check my site and compare photos of other rats that have porphyrin (pronounced POR-FRIN) in there eyes and around their nose.

Hairless rats lack eyelashes so debris seems to get in there alot and cause problems.  Is there any swelling? Can you see what the eye looks like?  Can you take a photo and attach it on here?  At the end of the message there is an area to attach a photo. Please see if you can take a pic for me. That would help alot. Also where are you located?  I will give you names of good vets for rats and not just a vet that sees rats but doesnt know much about them.

For now though, bathe it with cotton and warm clear water and gently dab away the discharge for her.  Is she eating and drinking ok??
