Question
i HAVE A PET CAG NOW. i AM THINKING ABOUT BUYING A MATE FOR HER FOR BREEDING. i WAS TOLD THAT IF A CAG IS A PET....IT WILL NOT BREED. IS THIS TRUE?

Answer
It sounds like the info got a little mixed up on the way to you.

If a bird is a breeder, they will almost always bond to each other and not be as friendly or loving to their human.

If you start breeding birds, you won't have the loving companionship you're probably enjoying now.  It's really not worth it.

In fact, unless you're a large breeder with a high cost type of bird, the costs behind breeding, including veterinary care is prohibitive.

Also, keep in mind that any egg laying hen (female bird) is at high risk of egg binding.  If this happens in the middle of the night, on a weekend or holiday - doesn't matter - she needs emergency vet care or she'll likely not make it more than a couple hours.  It's horrible to watch something like this and be helpless to do anything.

Breeder birds need to be checked regularly, like every 3 to 6 months.

If the babies aren't fed properly or fail to thrive (you'll also need a gram scale among other equipment, like an incubator) you may need to hand feed and that means investing a few days/nights solely to the chicks.  You cannot go to work/school or leave the house for more than an hour or so at any time.  Forget getting a full night's sleep. Do you know how to hand feed tiny babies?

Are you able to do this and are you ready to make the investment? Do you have a nearby vet who knows birds and has already seen your bird?  Is your girl over 1 1/2 years old?

These are all things you need to have answered before beginning.

I think it's better to just have the companion.  Take a look
