Parrot beak

Question
I recently adopted an abused macaw. He has a habit of smacking down his beak with his foot in it when the cage is approached. With love and understanding, he has gotten better at this, but recently, "chipped" a portion of his beak, losing a portion of the outside, shiny portion of his beak, with the structure behind still intact. We don't have a lot of money, and recently spent 400.00 on him. Other than removing the hard sandy perch from his cage, what else can I do that doesn't cost a small fortune?

Answer
From what you describe there should eventually be regrowth to the beak.
It's probably a good idea to remove the perch, but make sure there's a cuttlebone and/or mineral block somewhere in the cage.

I've got a step by step instruction at my site for how to re-establish trust and modify the behavior of a rescue like this (my site is all free).
