Chinchilla + Cat?

Question
Is it possible for a chinchilla and a cat to live together? I am thinking of adopting a kitten, although I initially also had plans to keep a chinchilla.

I don't mind keeping all of them together(I have a dog as well, a timid Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who doesn't bother cats), if they can get along, but I'm afraid if I get the kitten and the chinchilla at the same time the chin might get picked on, or play-hunted by the kitten.

Thanks! (:

Answer
Dear Su-Jin,
thank you for your question.
It's possible to keep both together, but I would never leave the cat or the dog alone with the chinchillas. It may be safe to have them in the same room while the chinchillas are outside their cage (they need a few hours exercise outside every evening), but that really depends on the personality of the cat/dog. I would be very careful about that and when in doubt, better not risk it.
When the chinchillas are inside their cage, they are usually not bothered by anything that happens outside and enjoy watching what's happening in the room. As long as the cat cannot reach into the cage, they will be fine.

Chinchillas are very social and must be kept in pairs or groups (of the same sex). A single chinchilla will be lonely and bored, may even develop stereotypical behaviour. I recommend looking into chinchilla rescue organisations, there are many chinchillas looking for good homes. This website has information on general care, how to find a good vet (very important) and on rescues and shelters:

I hope I was of some help to you
