Fresh Veggies

Question
Hi again Carol
My new degu is settling nicely in her new home, but I have a couple questions. She doesn't seem to want to eat any kind of fresh veggie. The only thing she has showed any interest in is sweet potato. She ignores lettuce, broccoli, cucumber, carrot, zuccini, cauliflower and green beans. Is it because they are new to her? She will eat dehydrated veggies, but not fresh.  The other thing is trying to get her out to exercise. She absolutely hates the large 12 inch run about ball. She would get into it initially but now she runs and hides. I would put her in for about 10-15 minutes but now that she knows what it is she seems absolutely not interested. I also have a wire pen for her but she can climb out. I need  place to put her when I 'm cleaning her cage, without stressing her out. She's very timid...can't touch her. Any tricks to the trade...a bin maybe?? with toys? I want her to look forward to coming out not be afraid. Thanks for your time.

Answer
It is most likely because they are new to her.  As for her run ball, it will just take time for her to learn it's her friend.  Make sure when you are transferring her from one place to another you are letting her climb into a wide mouthed jar then out into another space, not trying to catch her.  She can be in it while you are cleaning her cage, or you can get a smaller cage for that purpose.  Find her favorite treat and use it only at transfer times.  Let her climb in and out of the jar even when not transferring to get used to it.  It will take time and work, but eventually she'll become acclimated to the routine.

Good Luck,
Carol
