pet mouse eye problem

Question
I have 2 female mice approx 14 weeks old, I've had them for 5 weeks.  I am new to pet mouse ownership and am trying to learn as much as possible.  The problem mouse is Pumpkin.  When I first brought her home, she was making a clicking sound- found out she was allergic to aspen shavings.  Switched to Eco bedding- an non allergenic bedding and with in a few days, she was "click" free.  Now she has developed redness around both eyes.  It was a bit swollen and oozy at first, but after 3 days, just appears red- and the black part of her eye looks smaller- maybe there is some swelling, but doesn't look it.  She seems to eat, drink, and poop normally.  She plays with her cage mate and on the exercise wheel and other toys.  She seems toslleep quite a bit more than the other mouse.  Could this be more allergies and what should I do.  She also has a small bald spot on her left side- no redness or sores at all.  Thanks for any help yor might offer.

Answer
Eye problems are common in mice. It sounds like an infection so your vet should give you something to clear it up.

The good news is it doesn't seem to be causing her much discomfort if she is eating, drinking, pooping and playing with her cage mate.

She may have a reaction to the product you clean the cage with or even her environment e.g if you use an air freshener. This seems unlikely unless her buddy is experiencing similar problems.

Until you can see your vet use a salt solution of about a teaspoon in 1/2 cup of water around the affected area with a baby bud 2 or 3 times a day.

The bald spot could be stress related or linked to her eye problem. Your vet will be able to diagnose her accurately.

I hope she recovers soon. Please feel free to ask any more questions.
