when do baby mouse eyes open?

Question
QUESTION: My husband found a baby mouse a few days ago. It has due but eyes are not open.I've guessed that its about five days old from some pictures I've seen on a website.  We have been feeding it KMS cat milk and keeping it under a lamp for warmth but it doesn't seem to be growing. If there anything else we can do?

ANSWER: Dear Mandy,

Sometimes the reason you find a baby mouse is that the mother knew there was something wrong with it or it is a runt.  It may be that the mouse can grow up to be very healthy but just small.  I've raised perfectly healthy runts.

Best of luck and good health to the mouse!

QUESTION: We were also wondering, at what age do mice open their eyes? And also, when can you stop making them poop (when will they go on their own)?

Answer
Dear Mandy,

Tame mice open their eyes on about the 14th day.  My half-wild mice opened theirs on the 14th day.  Therefore I would guess that a wild mouse also opens its eyes on about the 14th day.

The answer to your second question is in itself:  You can stop making them poop when they do it on their own.  My guess is this will happen between 2 to 2 1/2 weeks of age, so shortly after opening the eyes.

Enjoy your mouse,
