Question
I have been searching some sites looking for an easy but accurate food web/chain diagram. In a couple of these diagrams it showed as a link in the chain mice eating grasshoppers or other insects. Is this true? Are mice omnivores? I was under the presumption that they ate seeds, grains and other plants. I know sometimes some species of animals will eat some of the newborn-is this true about mice? Thanks. Janet

Answer
Mice can and will, eat insects. Waxworms seem to be a favorite among the mice I've owned, and many rodents for that matter. They are high in fat, so if you do offer them some do so sparingly. As far as eating their young, yes, mice do that quite often. However it is usually because they are stressed out, or they sense something wrong with their babies, not for nutritional benefit.
