Question
My 20+ year old green iguana has a lump on her left side lower back that has since scaled over? It looks like her old scales never fell off and everything just grew over it? It doesn't seem to bother her but she is real thin and is eating just fine? Is this something that should be looked at right away?

Answer
Hi Alberta,
I would surely have it checked out. Is this area by any chance over a hip bone or other joint?  If yes, is it possible that the area is rubbed sore since she is "skinny"?  I don't think it needs to be on an emergency basis but I would do it as soon as you can get an appointment, hopefully within a few days.  What she may have is an abscess which will need to be diagnosed and treated.
With her age, the weight loss can be due to her age and she is reaching her "full age".  I do compliment you on her age!! It is wonderful to see an ig in their 20's.
Have you tried offering her some grated butternut squash and also mango and papaya? These foods seem to help put some weight on the igs. Also, I would have a fecal check done for internal parasites, which if there is a "overload" if internal parasites, they can lose weight..
Again, get a vet appointment for the soonest available time, but not necessarily an emergency.  In the meantime, you can apply some Neosporin or Bacitracin ointment to the area.
