Question
I was wondering if anything is wrong with my ferret Gynx. Around his eye is red and the other isnt. I dont know what can cause this hes an outside ferret. Will you please tell me what  to do i dot want him to die and i cant afford to take him to the vet.

Answer
Hello Taylor!

Irritations of the eye can be caused by any number of things.  It includes upper respiratory infections (URIs), allergies, glaucoma, scratches, etc.

No matter the cause, ANY eye issue should be seen by a veterinarian.  This is important since a cornea can become ulcerated and quickly become a MAJOR problem.  Or, with diseases such as glaucoma, severe damage can result to the optic tissue.  The irritation may go away on its own, but by not seeking medial attention, he has a potential risk of loosing an eye.

Also, I have a question for you?  Why is Gynx an outdoor ferret?  I am doubtful any of the experts here would recommend keeping a ferret out doors for many reasons.

First, he can contract any number of diseases.  Heartworm (one worm is lethal), parasites, fleas, giardia, viruses/infections.  They are also at risk for predators such as raccoons or foxes.  Being raised on a farm, I know from experience that a hungry carnivore will stop at nothing to break into a cage for a snack.

My second prominent concern is the weather.  Ferrets CANNOT tolerate ANY temperature over 80 degrees Fahrenheit.  It does not matter if he is in the shade OR has plenty of water available.  Ferrets are VERY prone to heat stroke and can die.  Not only that, but they cannot tolerate cold very well.  I would not keep a ferret outside in anything below 40 degrees.  They are at risk for pneumonia, just like any other animal.

Lastly, ferrets like being with you!  They form VERY strong bonds to their owners.  Gynx needs at least 3-4 hours out of his cage to roam around and interact with you.  Without this, he can become depressed and even form severe behavioral problems.  Ferrets have been known to die from depression!

I hope this information proves useful.  Please let me know if you have any further questions regarding the eye.  Also, perhaps you can change your mind about keeping Gynx outside?  He would be happier (and healthier) to be indoors with you!
