ferret, redness just above eye

Question
I have had ferrets for about 5 years now.  My oldest Miso woke up two days ago
with a redness just above her right eye.  It is not in the eye, but on the eyebrow.
I haven't seen this before in any of my babies, have you?

Answer
Hello Eric,

It sounds like this could be a mild allergic reaction, or perhaps your he was bitten by another who was playing too roughly.  As long as there is no discharge or squinting of the eye, and the area is not inflamed or bleeding, I would continue to monitor him.  If the redness becomes worse or his eye seems to bother him, bring him to your vet right away.

Eye injuries, especially scratches tot he cornea need treatment ASAP.  A veterinarian can diagnose this by staining the eye with a fluorescent dye and looking at the cornea under a black light.  If scratches or abrasions are seen, medications must be regularly administered to stave off infection.  This is why you should IMMEDIATELY bring him to your vet if you notice any problems with the eyes since the situation can quickly become serious.

Since he is acting normally other than the redness, there does not appear to be an eye problem.  If one develops, have him evaluated by your vet.
