Suckling?

Question
I have a 14 week old male ferret that is fixed and has been with us since he was 8 weeks old. We just recently (Sunday the ninth of Jan) were given a female ferret that is about 6 months old is also fixed. Our little man mounts her and sucks on her ears...then will bite her scruff and she squeals. I put bitter apple on her ears so he wont suck on them, she acts as if they are sore. Anyway...I am wondering if he is trying to mate or if he is just being dominant. He has made it very clear that this was his home first, which doesn't seem to be a problem with her but I am worried that they shouldn't be housed together in the same cage. They cuddle and seem to really enjoy having one another but I don't want him hurting her, whenever he mounts or suck on her she cries like crazy...help =]

Thank you!

Answer
It is possible it is his age as he was very young when you got him and he is acting like she is a litter mate.  This is generally what they do when young.  They grow out of it.  I would keep them together and he will stop or she will get fed up and stop him.  Their scruff is quite thick and can handle the biting.  Her ears may be tender for a while, but it isn't anything to worry about.
