Dog Peeing and Crapping in Crate

Question
Please help.  I have a 6 month old mastiff/pit mix female.  Nala has been spayed.  For some reason since she has been spayed, she is peeing and crapping in her crate.  We take her outside and she will sometimes pee and not crap or crap and sometime not pee.  Then when you put her in the crate she finishes what she started outside. When she does both outside, she is allowed to stay out her crate from a period time.  If not, she goes back into the crate.  What do I do to get her to understand that if she does what she needs to do outside, she can stay out of the crate?

Answer
Hello Pamela,

At six months, she's still a puppy. If she is going in her crate, it is probably because the crate is too large. Try a smaller crate.

As part of her potty training, she should be taught to do her business with a command like "go potty". More importantly, you should pretty much know her routine. She probably needs to go after she eats. Make sure she stays out until she completes all her business.

So put her on a dependable routine, keep her outside when you know it's time for her to go and get her a smaller crate.

Good Luck!
Sandy
