Male Pomeranian one and a half years old

Question
QUESTION: We have just gotten a male Pomeranian one and a half years old , and he is not completely house broken.  He is also NOT NEUTERED.  I crate him at night, and so far keep him on a leash with me around the house during the day so that I can keep an eye on him all most all the time.
I need to know the right way in training a Pomeranian.  He has not been taught any obedience .. and that is another area I need to address, because we were informed when we got him that if he got loose outside he would run, and not come when called.

So far, if I see him hike his leg, I tell him," NO!" And it stops him.  When I take him out to go potty he wants to run and play.. gets distracted by birds, other dogs in the neighborhood barking.. and everything in general. And doesn't want to potty right away. I take him out on the leash, to a designated spot(pine tree) and tell him ,"potty"(pee) he hasn't yet poo-ed, and we got him 2 days ago., after a minute he will stop looking around and potty..and then I bring him straight in , so that he knows that he is only out there to potty. I did let him off the leash a couple of times, and he runs around the house and has tried to hike his leg.  once he was unleashed , and he pee-ed in our bedroom. I wasnt right behind him to see what he was doing. My fault.

So, my question is. Is it the right thing to do to keep him on a leash in the house during the day so that I can keep an eye on him? (We have no plans of Neutering him.)I just want to know if this is the right thing to do, or if I should be doing something else. I don't want to use a shake can with him... I don't know if that would make him neurotic or not.Any help would be greatly appreciated ..
Much thanks, Sabrina

ANSWER: Sabrina, yes, you should absolutely keep him on a leash when he's in the house, until he has learned not to potty inside. When you take him out to potty, you are doing everything right, but you did not say whether you praised him or anything after he did what he was supposed to do out there. When he finishes doing his business, you should praise him in a happy tone of voice, and then let him off the leash for a few minutes so he can run around and play a bit if he wants to (as long as your yard is fenced, so he cannot run away). THEN you can go back inside. A shake can would not be productive, because it would frighten him and make it more difficult for you to grab the leash and get him outside. Just use your voice.

Having him neutered, unless you have plans on showing him, is a good idea, especially at his age. As intact male dogs get older, they become more and more at risk of reproductive system diseases and cancers. Intact males also have more of a tendency to want to run off in search of a mate to breed with, and often have higher instances of aggression, especially towards other male dogs. If he's not going to be shown, which he >>should be<< if you have plans on breeding him, do the right thing and have him neutered.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hello again.  I am so glad that I am doing the potty training right!! And Yes, I do praise him as he is pee-ing!The follow up question I have, since I sent my first email, is that I have found that our adorable little Male Pomer is poo-ing in his crate overnight. The crate is a bigger one than he is, and he poo'ed in the back end where I have put his blanket,(one time that I can tell) and in the front end of the crate away from his blanket.(one time) So, at this point Im in a quandry as what to do next. Thank you for your encouraging advice, and we will definitely keep all you said in mind.  Sabrina

Answer
You can do one of two things, or both, if doing just one doesn't solve the problem.

1. Make his crate smaller, so that he has just enough room to stand, turn around, and lie down in and/or
2. Remove the bedding from the crate, so he has no way of 'hiding' or burying the poo.

Let me know if he's still doing it in a few days, after you've tried these two suggestions.
