Question
My two year old schnauzer has started peeing and pooping in the house.  mostly on the upstairs carpet.  did it in guest bdr. after guest left.  does it in area in front of my cousins bdr. door(she has cats) does it in this area after I leave.  also does it when i am home.  recently cleaned carpet , laid down sheets over wet areas, because they are walk ways,  and Lucy peed twice.  so now i have recleaned the carpet and sprayed with vinegar, and have barred the doorway to up stairs.  my mom tells me she has started really raising a fuss when I leave.  also she raised a fuss when mom left and I was home.  doesn't seem to be quite so bothered by my cousins coming and going.  How can I get Lucy to stop peeing and pooping in the house again.  she has a doggy door and uses it.  Help,  Marsha Derby

Answer
Hello Marsha,

The short answer to your problem is to stop giving your dog so much affection and start giving him more discipline and exercise.

Your dog is not having "accidents". Your dog is marking and beginning to show separation anxiety. These are big red flags that your dog may love you but he doesn't respect you.

If you're not already, begin obedience training him. Concentrate on the heel and down command. Walk him daily at a strict heel. Make him do a down or sit before you pet him. Do not just give him affection unless he does something to deserve it. If you are giving him treats....stop.

Your dog feels he is the leader and must protect you and the household. It's causing him stress and he's presenting this stress by marking and separation anxiety. You need to turn this situation around by asserting your leadership and allowing your dog to be a dog again.

Finally I'd suggest you go to my website and read my article on "Training Tips". This will give you some more insight into bringing balance back into your relationship with your schnauzer.

Good Luck!
