nervous dog - urinating

Question
I have what I call a weeney dog - female and 8 years old.  I have had the dog going on 5 months. Shes loving and affectionate and house trained but she is nervous and timid. If you look at her wrong she becomes submissive and urinates.  If you correct her for any reason - she urinates. I need some tips on what to do!

Answer
Why "correct" her when you can "instruct" her?  Try marker, or clicker, training to teach her how you want her to behave.  It's non-confrontational, so timid dogs often do well with it, and you can use a marker word if the click scares her.  Free lessons can be found at www.clickerlessons.com
Your assessment that she is a "weeny" is endearingly correct.  You have a dog that wants to tell you that she is not a threat.  Try not to loom over her, and don't stare or approach her frontally - turn your body a bit to the side, kneel, and avert your eyes when you greet her.  Keep greetings low key and pat the chest or side of her face rather than reaching over her head.  That should help a bit.  Do not scold her if she submissively urinates, it only makes her want to appease you more, thus urinate more;-)
