Question
Dear Karen,
About 2 weeks ago, we have brought home a labrador.
we washed her and dried her thoroughly. she was fine throughout the
night, but the next day, she was having trouble breathing and a bloated stomach. Also, she was gagging, and trying to vomit and was very tired.
she was breathing very rapidly, so we took her to the vet immediately.
she was given various medications, x-rays taken, and the vet (we are in beijing, china) told us she had fluid in her lungs.
after 3 days of treatment, she wasn't getting any better, so
we found another vet.
the vet also has taken x-rays, medication (oral and shots), and she isn't getting any better. she also has been given co2 to supplement her breathing, and she has now stayed at the vet for about 9 days. the vet insists that she was getting better(she looked better), but all of the sudden, sam (my dog)is experiencing the rapid breathing problem.
(i wanted to take her back home with me yesterday)
the vet now says that one of her lungs is bad? collapsed?
what can i do to make sam better? it doesn't seem that the treatment and medication isn't working.

NOTE* sam doesn't have blue gums, she has great teeth, hearing is good, almost like a normal puppy when she isn't experiencing the breathing problem. Also, her stool was normal, and her urine was yellowish at times, but mainly clear.

my most important question is, will sam be able to make it through? and is she in pain? how much pain is too much pain for
a puppy?

Answer
It sounds to me as though you were sold an unhealthy puppy, and you should contact your breeder for a replacement (or your money back). At the very minimum, the breeder should guarantee the puppy's health for a few days after you bought it. Get a letter from your veterinarian(s) stating that the puppy was not healthy at time of purchase (puppies do not get sick in one day). I would also present your breeder with the veterinary bills. If the breeder refuses to stand behind his stock, I would take him to court to get your money back.

Your veterinarian is the only one who can advise you as to your puppy's condition, but, unfortunately, it doesn't sound good at all. This sounds very much like pneumonia to me, and, yes, I believe it is painful. Also, urine should never be totally clear, as that means the puppy is not concentrating its urine; this could indicate kidney issues... or that she had been drinking lots of water for some reason.
