Question
Hi,
My Jack Russell just had pups last wed.
She had 5 pups and it is her first litter.
She and the pups are pure breed.
She has not been eating unless i hand feed her, and she has not been drinking. I have been syringing the water into her mouth every 15mins or so.
The pups seem fine, and her milk seems to be flowing fine.
She has also been diggind and scratching things... The couch and blankets etc.
I have the pups and her in a dog bed/box in the lounge room as it is cold and the heater is on in here.
The lounge room is fenced off so she cant leave the lounge unless I take her out to the toilet.
I am wondering, is there something wrong with her? I am very concernd about her not drinking, and only eating when I hand feed her.
I have never had a dog have pups before and I have no experience.
I was told she may have calcium defiency and this can cause death?!?!?!?!?
I have been giving her liquid calcium solution in her food, 10ml a day.
Also she has been on puppy food since she was 2 weeks pregnant.
Any advice would greatly help.
Thanks.

Answer
Em,
It would be a good idea to have a vet check her to make sure she doesn't have afterbirth or another puppy inside of her.  Not eating right after is normal, I am a little concerned about the not drinking though.  If she has been on puppy food she should be ok, add a little cottage cheese to her diet to replace the supplement.  I would definitely get her to a vet to have her checked.  Yes lack of calcium can cause seizures and death, but usually if they are on a good food that doesn't happen.  Her digging around makes me think she may have an afterbirth in her.  Also, the afterbirth they eat, makes them sick many times.  Her uterus shrinking can cause her to dig around also, since the pain of that is similar to contractions.
Well, get her to the vet and ease your mind as well as mine.  Let me know, I always worry about things like this.

PS If she still isn't eating, make the food mushy and put it on the puppies' backs.  She will injest the food while cleaning her babies.  An old breeders trick.
