how do you go about housebreaking a german shepherd puppy

Why not baby gait off ONE room to keep the puppy in.  Take it out every hour, exit same door to the same spot and WAIT then pet and praise.  Hang a ring of old keys on that door knob for it to learn to swat or hit for attention.
If your persistant in taking it out often enough and waiting till it smells and piddles around, it will house break within a week.
Made sure it gets daily exercise also.  Not keeping it inside and no walks.  A good thing is to get a doggie hook on a bike, teach it to follow slowly at first and till it is a year old, not letting it run on hard pavement or surfaces.
