Question
We have a German Shepherd mix puppy named Molly.  She is roughly 12 to 14 weeks old.  We have had her since she was 5 1/2 weeks.  Recently she has started to pee when she gets excited, i.e. when the kids get home from school, when my husband gets home, when my mom's dog Lilly comes over.  This happens even if you have just taken her out 2 min. before.  Why is she doing this, and what can we do?

Answer
Hi Allicia
Your puppy has excitement urination problems. The most important thing is to ignore her. She can't help it. She will outgrow it but there are ways to help her now as well. Do not ever ever ever punish her for this behavior. Do not pet or play with her when she is in this excited frame of mind. Try to have her greet the kids outside when they come home, and have them keep the greeting very low key and short. Hi Molly, pet her under the chin, walk on into the house. If she is still beside herself have them ignore her completely until she is calm and submissive (lies down sits etc, stops wagging everywhere and having puppy fits). It is a puppy phase and she will outgrow it, just try to keep calm and help her through it. It has nothing to do with potty training. Here's a website to help you even more
