Blood in my Cockers stool

Question
QUESTION: I noticed blood in my one year old cocker spaniel's stool today for the first time. I have noticed lately he's had some regular stool and some that is runny...but today there was also bright colored blood.I have also noticed when we are out walking and he has a bowl movement that he drags his rear on the grass sometimes.
There have been some changes lately such as we moved out of my laws house and now live in our own home, but we have been feeding him the same food as he was fed at my in laws house which is a Ol Roy's brand of dry food. Also recently before we moved we gave him one of those pills that are supposed to get rid of fleas...at my in laws house there were five other dogs besides mine and there was a pretty bad problem with fleas. I don't know if that pill could have caused blood...I'm just very concerned and would appreciate anything you could tell me that might help him or determine what could be causing this.

ANSWER: If he's "scooting" (dragging his rear) it means his anal glands need to be emptied.  No big deal and your vet's tech can do it.

Please don't use over-the-counter flea meds.  Best to use Revolution monthly which protects against fleas and heartworm.  Unless it was Capstar?  That is safe.

Now..Ol Roy is probably the worst food on the planet.  I'll just beg you to give him better nutrition.  If you tell me what city you're in I'll find out where they sell better dog food like Innova.
Quite honestly, Ol Roy is dangerous crap.

As far as blood in the stool - don't panic and bright red drops mean it's not in the digestive tract so it's "probably" just an upset tummy.
I'd cook some scrambled eggs (4)- use no oil and 1 cup of plain white rice and feed him that for a day in small meals.  Let his tummy settle down and keep an eye on his stool.  If it continues more than a few days then take him to a vet.

But do get his anal glands looked it - this is very uncomfortable for him and not attended to it can lead to infection.

QUESTION: We gave him a flea pill that we got from the animal hospital actually, but I do not recall the name of it.
We live in Jacksonville now. My cousin who worked at a pet store once told me that when you go to the store for dog food to check the ingredients and if the first ingredient listed is corn its bad but if the first ingredient is some kind of meat then its good food...is that true?
Thank you, you very much for your help so far!

Answer
It was probably Capstar and that's fine.

Your cousin is dead right...look at the first 3 ingredients because that's what your dog is eating.  No good dog food will have corn, wheat, by-products (meat) or too many carbs.

I'm going to check out Jacksonville pet food stores.. and Tiffany, just write me directly at DeeBeck7765@aol.com so we can chat further.  Do that now and I'll have store info for you.

And do get him to the vet for the anal glands and a stool sample wouldn't be a bad idea either.
