Crusty sore on necl

Question
QUESTION: Hello, we have two cocker spaniels. mother and daughter. Mocha is 2 and Freckles is 1. Just recently they both have developed a crusty round sore on their chin/neck (it is above the collar). I can tell that they are tender because when I try to clean them and put antibiotic on them they show discomfort. We feed them Purina Dog Chow and bath usually every other week. Mocha also has very bad breath all of the time. Any helpful information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

ANSWER: What type of collar are you using?  What's it made of?

Purina Dog Chow is probably the very worst food on the planet.  I'd strongly suggest transitioning them to a much better food like Innova.  yes, it's more expensive BUT you feed less of it.  If you go to Naturapet.com you can find out where to buy it in your area.
If you can't find it - I can suggest other foods.

As to the crusty sores - I suspect the collar may be the culprit.  So keep the collars off unless they're being walked.  What antibiotic cream are you using?  How are you cleaning the area?  The fact that both of them have the identical problem leads me to feel it must be the collar.

p.s.  Are you brushing their teeth?

QUESTION: I have since changed the dog food to Professional Brand. It is chicken and barley formula - no corn, soy, or by products. Their collars are regular nylon/fabric collars. The sores are about an inch below the ear opening. I clean them with warm water and Dial antibacterial soap and apply Neosporin. They do seem to be getting better. I do not brush their teeth. Please note: I also have a shitzu/cocker spanial mix and he has none of these issues.
Thank you for your time and knowledge,

Brenda

Answer
All I can say is that if two dogs have identical sores in the same location that "something" is causing it.  In the meantime, until it heals, I'd use a harness when walking them.  The collar will aggravate the area.

The pup with the bad breath absolutely needs to start having her teeth brushed.  Never use human toothpaste.  There are also "wipes" you can use on lips and chops to help with bacteria.

I'm glad to hear things look better...but do a Sherlock Holmes :) to see what on earth caused this.
Best of luck,
Delores
