excessive shedding

Question
I have an 11 month old female cocker spaniel. She is shedding so much that we have to clean every other day. She sheds balls of hair. Also I notice that she scratches herself alot although I have her on Frontline Plus. I feed her Iams Mini-Chunks. What else can I do?

Answer
The first thing to do is get her on a decent food.  Cockers do not do well on kibble because it's too high in carbs.
Canned food I recommend:
Canidae (go to Canidae.com & find a dealer)
AvoDerm (PetSmart)
Solid Gold (PetCo)
Innova (wherever they sell Canidae, will sell Innova EVO, Eagle Pack-Merrick)

Now you say you "clean her every other day"..what exactly are you doing?  If you're bathing - this is far too much.

Also is she scratching in a particular place?  Look at her skin carefully - do you see white flakes?  Any redness anywhere?  How long has this been going on?  What is the climate where you are?

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being mild - 10 being severe), how bad is the scratching?

Are you willing to switch food and add some supplements?
