Boxer drooling & gagging

Question
Hi there, I have a 4 year old male boxer named Jake.

In the past Jake would have nights, maybe one or two a month where he would start excessively drooling and then the gulping and gagging would start.  This would lead to him trying to be sick to his stomach, sometimes being sick, other times puking white foam.  Then we would eat grass to feel better and it would start all over again in 20 minutes, with the drooling never ending.  This would last all night, until I could finally get him to lie down and fall asleep.  In the morning he would be better.  We have taken him to the vet numerous time for this, and have been told a number of thing:
- it's because he has an allergy/ itchy ear - give him a Benadryl - we tried this and it didn't work
- he has an upset stomach - give him a pepcid ac - sometimes this worked other times he just puked up the pill
- this is the way a boxer is - they said there was a pill they could give us to change the way he digests food to help prevent this but that he would be on it for the rest of his live - I don't want to do this

However since the beginning of March we have already had 2 nights like this and then last night he started drooling worse that I have ever seen, his chest and front paws were soaked with 5 minutes, it was just a steady stream of drool out of his mouth.  He started to get real lethargic and dopey.  My husband took him into the vet and they said basically other than a "gurgling" stomach there was nothing wrong with him.  He gave him a shot they said is suppose to calm the stomach, it didn't stop the drooling only made him even more dopey.  They told us to try graval next time to see if that works.

Do have any idea what this could be or recommend any tests to have done on him.  I feel so bad for the guy and would love to be able to solve and fix this once and for all.

Answer
Get him to a Boxer-savvy vet ASAP. The vet needs to know that it is NOT because he is a Boxer. That is ludricous!
