Question
I am in the process of adopting a bichon puppy.  However, I have a 2 year old lab.  He is mainly and outside dog.  He is well trained, but does get really excited when he meets new dogs.  I want them to know each other and be acquainted, even though they will not necessarily be living together.  Do you have any suggestions on the best way to introduce them to each other?

Answer
Hi there Ashley
well done on the adoption.
Now then, what many people forget is that the house dog (one already in place ) is the alpha dog until such a time that the two define their own boundaries.
You donot state what sex the adoptee is , so I shall explain both .
If male , then at some stage there will be a territorial issue so suggest castration of both. They will live very well together if no female enters the property as then even if castrated they will have thoughts about owning her.
Now if the adoptee is a female then hey the Lab will think that all his xmas'have come at once so suggest castration of him and or spaying of her after six months of age.
Introduce them to a neutral place to begin with and dont barge into the situation if the house dog growls, this is normal.
Set strict boundaries on who is allowed where this must be for both dogs at all times. Dogs do get jealous and they will show their feelings through envy of the other if you do not establish ground rules quickly.
I have actually got articles on this on my site and you are welcome to join its free and it will help you integrate them fully.
