QuestionMy 8 mth old has been coughing on and off since I have had her. I got her at 8 weeks and she had a terrible hacking cough then which I knew nothing about until that evening. The vet didn't seem concerned about that at all which was surprising. Well, it hasn't gotten that bad since then but she seems to acquire a little bit of a hacking cough from time to time. Is there anything I can give her for this? Thanks in advance.
Answerhi there well this could be a number of problems all common in bichons and toy breeds. Firstly it sounds like reverse sneezing with does sound like a hacking cough, the chest is drawn up and looks like the dog is in distress, to alleviate this simply take the muzzle and gently grip together in your hand, blow up the nostril, this will return the diaphragm to normal immediately.
On the other hand it could be a small trachea, many bichons have this and it is genetic, the way to tell is have the vet examine the trachea with a light source, usually the dog will gag when eating or gulp and appear to choke, a harness is best worn when walking and cut food up small, either way , your dog will be fine,
