Night time Bichon frise crate problems

Question
We have just brought an 8 wk Bichon Frise puppy, she has been good in every way and is very good at going to the toilet in the garden. But we have one big problem as soon as we put her in her crate at bedtime she screams and cries sometimes for up to 4 hours, we are trying to be firm and leave her (her crate is in a downstairs dining room) when we get up in the morning she has always poo'd in the crate and managed to spread most of it all over herself the crate and her bedding, i am asuming that she is doing this as she is getting stressed i have tried to make her crate comfortable with a cosy bed toys and treats but nothing seems to work. she also whines if none of the family are in her sight, her crate is quite large and i wonder if a smaller one would help?

Answer
Melissa the size isnt the problem, she has separation anxiety which is hardly surprising due to her age. Her last meal must be at 6pm and she has to be taken for a poop within 2 hours of eating even through the night. For at least 4 weeks . Then she is able to be left for 3 hrs etc for her age . I would also suggest covering the crate with a cover to make it feel more secure , rather like a den , which is effectively what it is.In actuality within five days of doing this she should be fully trained so long as you dont give in. I would suggest that you go to my site and read the step by step instructions on how to crate train a puppy. Its all free and will be invaluable for you over the coming weeks.
