Question
My bichon is 2 yrs old,  continually chews his feet,  vet suggested allergy test but I can't afford to spend the money on them and would have to drive 80 miles,  can he be given benedryl or something.   We tried a vet approved food,  just thought maybe there might be an overcounter medication we could try.

Answer
I am not a vet so cannot suggest a medication, however I can from experience state that we have given the childs dose of benadryl and yes it was succesful. I must point out that this only masks the problem, it needs addressing for causes.
If the test results from the vet appear fine then I suggest taking the dog off all commercial food. We have had much success with using a raw food diet, itching has stopped within weeks.
Here is what I do
Give omega 3,6,9 daily in the diet
Use oily fish in the diet daily such as mackeral, sardines, salmon
Give chicken wing, pork belly, lamb neck and fillet, tripe
Green beans apple, pear, broccolli, mashed pots, cheese (sparingly in case intolerant)Goats milk, probiotic yoghurt, cucumber,
Use cranberry tablets, fibre diet tablets and lutein in the diet.
All are cheap and easily available from Holland and Barratt (UK) also USA health stores.
