Question
Hi just wondered how much should i be feeding my 9 almost 10 month bischon (male).  At the moment i give 75g of dry science plan puppy food topped with about 50g of wet food james well beloved puppy junior he gets these amounts twice a day. he appears overweight really heavy but still quite active but often panting for breath.  I don't know what to do and the vet isn't always that helpful. please help its my first pet and now he always seems hungry and crying and begging for food and i don't know whether his just hungry or greedy. thank you so much

Answer
Hi Georgia well firstly a dog on dry foods and commercial foods is generally more hungry than one on a natural meat and veg diet this is due to the fact they are commercial and thus the companies want you to send more. The simplistics is this more dogs now are obese since the introduction of convenience foods rather the same as we did with TV frozen meals.

Now you would have to look at the brands used and make sure that you feed within the guidelines or you could actually alter over 3 weeks to a more natural diet, there are several benefits to a more natural approach one being they eat less, they remain fuller and have fewer allergies, they keep a good weight and tend not to be obese. Their teeth and oral hygiene improves and they become far more energetic and live better lives.

Firstly you can start to introduce raw carrot batons as a snack , apple slices and cucumber.
Raw meaty bones can also be introduced in place of a meal a day, then over 3 weeks introduce the natural diet this way use either prepared frpzen meals available from most pet stores or make your own most of us do , visit www.eurobichons.com for specialist advice and reassurances and hey your doggy will soon be in tip top form.
