Question
I have a three month old American Pit Bull Terrier & Blue Heeler/Border Collie mix named Harley. We got him at eight weeks and of course, every time we feed him, his food is always gone pretty quickly. He's always been perfectly healthy, and he has one more round of shots before he's finished (next Monday). However, last night he went to the bathroom ALL over our apartment while we were asleep and we had to spend the whole morning picking up and and cleaning the carpet. I thought he might have diarrhea, because he was continually drinking, but now he's playing with his toys, and chewing on things, drinking plenty of water, but STILL not touching his food. He's been this way for a couple of days now. It's so hot outside where we live, I'm scared to take him out for too long for fear of him getting heat exhaustion from not having any food in him. Our vet is good about prices and scheduled appointments, but getting in without one is close to impossible, especially since he doesn't have anything broken.

Help please? :)

Answer
First of all, I would recommend crate training; this would prevent accidents in the house of any kind at any time, no matter what age the dog.

As long as he's drinking, and he has no further diarrhea, I would not worry unless he doesn't eat in another day or so.  Dogs can go without food a lot longer than they can go without water.  If he doesn't drink anything, and has diarrhea, you run the chance of him becoming dehydrated, which can be a serious situation.

Most vets allow some time in their schedules for serious problems, and a dog that isn't drinking and has diarrhea is serious.  Be sure to keep your vet informed of the dog's condition.
