Puppy agression

Question
Hi there! We have a 4.5 month old australian cattle dog mix. He is a typical puppy, fun and lively. The biggest issue, is he will jump onto the table for food, jump to get it out of your hand, or get something he SHOULDNT have, then bite if you try to get it back. He got into the trash and my husband went to clean it up and got bit. Just now he had his rawhide, he was on the couch and no one else could even walk in front of it, he lunged at me. He doesnt bite when he meets people, but it seems to be when he has something he is jealous of or shouldnt have. I really need help, my husband wants to get rid of him, but I think we can train him. Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Arlene, Firstly Aussie Cattle Dogs are working dogs and very active. Secondly, he is still very young.  Are you and your husband both working and possibly not giving him lots of good working time?  Your dog need to learn very quickly that you and your husband are the Alpha dogs.  It is quite simple at such a young age. Give him a favorite bone and take it from him, if he attempts to bite or snip, quickly roll him onto his back, hold him firmly by the neck and stare at his eyes until he breaks his gaze at you.  You may have to repeat this several times for him to understand you are the boss.  It does not hurt him and will make him a much better partner for life.  He is being territorial and protective of what he considers his items. That is normal, but it is up to you to let him know, in no uncertain terms,  that it is unexceptable always! If you need further advice, let me know and be sure to leave me some feedback on your progress.  Thanks. Regards, Susan
