Question
QUESTION: I HAVE A NEW PUPPY 6 MONTHS OLD, "YORKI" I TAKE HIM OUT ALL THE TIME, HE WON'T GO. I AM CONSISTANT, SAME SPOT EVERY TIME. I GIVE HIMA TREAT WHEN HE DOES GO(HE GOES WHEN I STAND THERE FOR LIKE AN HOUR). I TOOK HIM OUT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, HE DID NOTHING. I PUT HIM DOWN, AND FED HIM. I WENT TO WASH MY HANDS, HE PEED. I CAN'T SEEM TO WIN. PLEASE HELP ME, JUDY

ANSWER: Hi, Judy,

Thanks for contacting me.

How long have you had the dog? Where did you get him? Do you know anything about his past history? Where do you live: city, small town, suburbs, the country? Do you ever scold or punish him for his mistakes? What kind of games does he like to play? (Play is a very important tool for learning all kinds of things, including impulse control, which is important in housebreaking.)

I look forward to hearing back from you.

QUESTION: HI, I HAVE HAD CORKY(MY YORKI) FOR A WEEK NOW. HE CAME FROM KANSAS. I KNOW THAT THE WOMAN BREEDS THEM, SHE SAID THAT HE USED A DOGGIE DOOR. I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY, FENCED IN YARD. I HAVE A DOG KENNEL OUTSIDE, AND THAT'S WHERE I TAKE HIM EVERY TIME. I DON'T SCOLD HIM. WE RUN AROUND TOGETHER OUTSIDE, HE LOVES THAT. I CONSTANTLY REWARD HIM WITH TREATS WHEN HE DOES WHAT I WANT HIM TO DO.

Answer
Hi again.

I think Corky's problem is probably just temporary. He probably feels displaced in his new environment. Just be patient, give him as many opportunities to go outdoors as possible, and in the meantime play with him as much as possible, get down on his level, play tug and fetch. If he gives you a playful nip or two that's okay. It just means he's feeling more comfortable about just being a dog around his new owner. If he gets too nippy, deflect his urge to nip you into a toy.

Does he have any toys? Do you get on the floor or grass and play with him? These things will be very beneficial and go a long way toward making him feel comfortable in his new home.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.
