Question

Ava
Hi, I have a female shih Tzu approximately four yrs old that was rescued from an old couple that was no longer able to care for her. They had 10 shih Tzus that they used to breed for profit. I've had her for eight months now and have fallen head over heels for her and she has for me as well. I brought her to the vet when I first got her; she received her check up and vaccinations with no problems. About three months ago she started pooping on my 23 yr old daughter's bed and I'm baffled. She urinates occasionaly in the hall when we are sleeping but I figure sometimes accidents happen. I do walk her many times including a midnight walk to try to prevent accidents. She will poo on my daughter's bed at any time during the day or night even if my daughter is in the bed. Please help me to figure out why she is doing this.

Answer
This appears to be some sort of rank statement.  Your daughter may be one of two things: over affectionate (unearned attention) or avoidant (no attention or intolerant): this is an educated GUESS.

Urination in the hall during your sleeping time might be a sign of separation issues; this dog should NOT have free run of the house when you are not awake and observing her.  Full run of any house is a huge "responsibility" to a dog; a dog from such an abusive background is a candidate for over attachment to the primary caregiver (you) and any separation may provoke anxiety and its related behaviors.  Confine her to a soft bed in an area where "accidents" won't matter: the kitchen is a good place.  If she can't roam the house at night, she can't defecate on your daughter's bed (the door to this room should be closed during the day to prevent the dog from repeating this behavior).  Considering this dog's truly awful past history, she looks WONDERFUL and this behavior is a non issue if you give her a place of her own at night and prevent her from accessing bedrooms during the day.
