Question
Hello, I was hoping you could give me some advice I am very worried about our 18month old male shitzui yorkie cross.  Over the last six weeks he has displayed aggressive behavior, he has also started spining around very fast attacking his tail in what only I can describe as a tazmanian devil kind of way, he also rubs his face/head alot across the floor or with his paws (He has been doing this for longer and I do not know if it is relevant) when he attacks himself his eyes glaze over and he is trance like, he is subdued when he comes round, seeming not to recall what has happened.  He has also started attacking myself and my partner if we do something he does not like, such as dry him with a towel/disturb whilst sleeping. I took him to the vets last week and she emptied his anal glands as they were blocked and suggested castration. His behavior has not since improved, I am reluctant to get him castrated but will if it helps.  In addition he escaped from the garden and ran into the road and was hit by a car about four months ago, the vets checked him out at that time, they give him a pain killer and said he was fine apart from shock, he has been alot more timid and jumpy since this happened.  Thanks Regards Michelle.

Answer
FIND ANOTHER VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY.  Your dog's behavior may be related to that injury; he should have had a CT scan.  There is NO WAY anyone can judge from a mere physical examination any extent of injury done to the brain or spinal cord following impact with a car.  The veterinarian's inability to see that this dog is suffering seizures (which is obvious to me) means the veterinarian is NOT qualified.  Locate the best veterinary clinic in your area with a staff of trained vets, a neurologist on board is important.  Rubbing face on floor may be food allergy as may be the startle effect upon awakening, but this dog is demonstrating symptoms of low level seizure activity and has had a very serious incident in the recent past that might explain it. GO TO THE VET.
