Older dog has problem with new puppy

Question
I bought an 8 week Yorkie a month ago and my 7 year old lab mix had the normal reactions of adjustment, but now she refuses to go outside to relieve herself. This morning she actually went in the house,up until this time she would go outside when she had to go really bad. I have tried everything..not sending the puppy out with her, and having my kids let her out, and also leading her out by a leash. Nothing is working. I know she is mad at me and I haven't stopped paying attention to her so I'm hoping you can help.

Answer
Your dog is not "mad" at you; she is reacting to a new pack member.  It's possible your dog is eliminating indoors because your puppy is doing the same.  However, the odd sudden refusal to eliminate outdoors is quite aberrant, as often in multiple dog households the youngest members actually house train far more easily because they are following the lead of the older dog(s).  So I suggest you go back to square one with your lab mix.  GO OUT WITH HER not on leash and by herself (many dogs accustomed to free elimination will NOT do so on leash.)  Reward with small food treat and lots of praise when she eliminates outdoors.  This might take some time at first but if you know she has to go, then you need to stay OUTSIDE WITH HER until she does.  Within a few trials, she should easily connect the treat and praise with her elimination and her house training abilities should return.  Meanwhile, if you're using house training pads with the Yorkie and don't intend for that dog to eliminate outside, put those pads in a place your lab mix cannot, and does not, go -- like a small downstairs bathroom.  This will at least confine the puppy's elimination.
