My dog wont eat

Question
QUESTION: I have a 10 year old poodle mix. She was attacked by a
rottweiler 10 days ago a few doors from our house while on a
walk with my mother. She was picked and shaken by the dog
before it's owner got his dog off mine. She didn't sustain
serious damage, about 6 stitches in different places on her
neck and back. She was placed on Amoxi-tabs and sent home.
Since the attack, she hasn't eaten except a few pieces of
cheese, and they must be hand fed. We have tried everything
to no avail. She was returned to the vet after 6 days. They
X-rayed her and discovered she has an enlarged heart. They
took out the stitches, discontinued the amoxi-tabs and
placed her on lasix. We are still unable to get her to eat.
Is there anything you can suggest to help? She was a
reasonably robust dog until the attack, now she seems like
she is dying. I also must tell you she is epileptic, and on
bromide since she was an infant.

ANSWER: I'm sure this experience has frightened her terribly and is probably a good part in why she's not wanting to eat. It could also be because she is in pain and doesn't feel like eating. Did your vet give you any suggestions? Did they give you any meds for the pain? Do they think she has fluid on her heart? Because lasix is a fluid pill that takes away fluid from the body to urinate it out.

So in 10 days, the only thing she's eaten was a few pieces of cheese?! Have you tried heating the food at all? That seems to add a tantalizing flavor bust. At this point anything goes; take out, fast food, cat food; it really doesn't matter. Leave out several different options for her to choose from.

QUESTION: She doesn't seem to be in pain. She is not on any pain meds
either. The lasix is exactly for the fluid on her heart. I
am starting to believe she is suffering from PTSD. I would
appreciate any suggestions to get her back on the road to
recovery. As for the food. We attempt to feed her all types
of foods. She eats a little liver sausage and the cheese.
She won't really touch anything else. The cat food is a good
idea though.

Answer
For something this traumatic, it could take time for her to regain faith in life again. If it was my dog, I would try to act as natural as possible like nothing ever happened. Try to go back to the way things were. Maybe do an activity that she loves or a place that she loves to go. Something to help make her happy.
