Question
Hello:
I am looking to get a dog that can be a part of a young family.  I am also looking for this dog to have good instincts like when a stranger in on the property to bark.  I have almost 5 acres and would love for a dog to not only be  a family member but to aid in safety and security. Any breeds you could recommend?
Thanks Keith Benway

Answer
Hi Kieth, Sure, there are many breeds for you to consider as well as mixed breeds. If you have the time to properly train the dog to be a good house pet as well as a property guardian with good manners, you can get by with most breeds. The herding group (collies, shepherds...) require lots of exercise and need a job to do, so they will require more training so that they do not get into trouble. But they are smart and make lovely family pets. The working breeds are generally good guardians, the bigger they are, the more exercise you must give them. Running around on five acres does not qualify as exercise as dogs can get into too much trouble if left to their own instincts. You need to take the dog for long walks at the heel to exercise the mind and body, and give it a good foundation in obedience. The terriers are ferocious and determined. They will not give up and are easily trained because they are very smart. Read up on the different breeds and groups, learn about their training and exercise requirements. Consider your family, if you have children or will have children around, how much time you can put into training, how much money you can afford on training, feed and vet bills... We have had Great Danes, Dobermans, Standard Poodles, Terriers, and many other breeds as farm dogs and all are part of our family. Be sure to teach the youngsters how to interpret pack behavior and how to be a pack leader with your guidance, so they are not fearful and do not get hurt. Talk with local trainers, your spca, humane society, groomers, vets and behaviorists ahead of time so you are making an informed decision. I am so glad to hear that you are open to considering different breeds prior to making a decision. It is nice to hear from people who do their research and are not impulsive. Leave me some feedback and let me know what you decide upon, or if you need more help. Thank you for writing. Regards, Susan
