Question
Hi,
I was just wondering what breed of dog you would recommend that will get along well with a cat and also another dog. I would also like a small dog that will be indoors.

thanks for you help

Answer
I can't direct you to any particular breed (other than suggest you avoid Terriers).  More important is the temperament of the new addition, and the temperament of the dog you presently have.  You should be looking for a dog that is friendly but not overly excitable; can be handled by you without a struggle; is bid-able (meaning, will work for cheese); and has had socialization to cats.  You introduce your dog to this new dog OFF your property with both on leash, walking parallel to one another at first, then allowing them to interact with close observation.  Even a dog socialized to cats will show extreme interest in a "new" cat.  If your cat is strongly secure with your dog and not fearful of other dogs, s/he will most likely not run.  If the cat runs, the dog (no matter how well socialized to other cats) will chase.  Putting the new dog on a long house tab (lightweight training leash) for the first two weeks it is in your home will insure that s/he does not successfully chase the cat (allowing the cat to become bolder and learn not to run), will not get into other problems (house training, destruction, interacting with your present dog in ways you prefer not to see) and secure a stronger bond between you.  Do NOT adopt a dog from an ad in the paper!  People LIE about why they are rehoming dogs.  Instead, go to a local no-kill shelter or SPCA.
