cat pooping problem!

Question
Hi,

I have a shorthair Persian, a wonderful cat except that he poops outside the litter box...in the tub....in the sink...he goes in the box sometimes, last night I got home and he went behind the fishtank.  And it smells TERRIBLE.  I got him from a shelter, he did this at first, but had stopped, and is not starting again.

I am at the end of my rope...I would hate to bring him back to the shelter but this is very frustrating.  I have a littermaid so the box stays clean....using the same brand of litter, he always pees in the box, pooping is the problem.

HELP!!!!

Thanks
Dave

Answer
Hello Dave.

That WOULD be frustrating. I have a LitterMaid too and I love them BUT I would try using a larger, regular litterbox and see if that works. There are some cats who think they don't have time to poop in an automatic litterbox. They get nervous and can't go in them so they go somewhere else.

You might also try leaving the automatic one for him to pee in and add a regular litterbox somewhere away from the automatic one and see if he will use the regular one to poop in. It's a pain in the neck I know, but then you will know if it's a behavior/medical problem or a litterbox problem.

If you try that and it doesn't work write back and we will go from there.
