Question
Hello i have an 12 week old male kitten and have just brought an 8 week old female kitten i have introduced them to each other, however the male seems to want to fight and roll on top of her. the female is only little and not sure if this is what is suppost to happen. i want them to play together but it seems really rough. How do we over come this situation to make them become friends?

Answer
Steven,

You've got to go through an introduction period slowly. It can take 2 weeks, a month, or more for them to start getting along. You can not just put them together and expect them to get along. That very rarely ever happens.

I am attaching a couple of links on how to go about the introduction process: (copy and paste, or type the whole links into your address bar)

Once they can be together without fighting feed both cats yummy cat treats (like tuna or tinned sardines in oil) TOGETHER. That is so the cats will associate each other with something pleasant.

Also getting a pet laser light (at PetSmart, etc.) is great for interaction between the two cats. They both can chase the 'little red bug' on the floor, ceilings, and walls, and they tend to forget about the other cat as they focus on the 'bug' which helps them get used to each other.

I would also get the male neutered now, especially since you have a female kitten. I just had 2 kittens neutered at the SPCA and they were 11 1/2 weeks old. It helps cut down on behavior problems.

It just takes time and lots of patience. It will work out if you take it slow and don't force them together until they are ready and it is safe for the little one. When the little one acclimates to her new home she will better be able to fight back.
