cat-sitting

Question
Dear Tabbi,
I currently have an 8 year old spayed and declawed (I would never do that again!) cat.  I have recently cat-sat for a friend of mine who has a 3 year old neutered, fully clawed cat.  I will be cat-sitting again when they go on a month-long vacation.  The two cats didn't fight TOO much this last time but I'd like some advice on how I should handle their encounters.  I know now that next time I should keep them separated for a few days to let them get used to each other.  However, my friend's cat is very high energy and my cat definitely isn't.  When they do meet, should I let my friend's cat try to play with my cat?  My cat responds by growling, hissing, and eventually running away.  I had been squirting my friend's cat with water when he tried to play with my cat, but is this the best way to handle the situation?  Since they don't fight aggressively, should I just let them "duke it out?"  I just want to make sure both cats are safe and comfortable.
Thanks,
Mary Beth

Answer
Mary Beth,

Hissing, growling, and slaps are normal kitty language and is normal in your situation. Squirting with water will make a mess and confuse the cat because he is not really being a 'bad kitty'.
