Question
Hi Becky,
We bought two cats from the 'cats protection league' in April this year for our daughter they are both around 2yrs old. Unfortunatley they are very jumpy around the family - you only have to walk past them and they run the other way - we have a dog which doesn't bother them but as soon as you go near them (unless you have food)like I said they run away.  We have never had cats is there anyway we can socialise them a little better. We don't know much about their history as they were shelter cats.  They seem to love where we live in the country and are forever bringing in dead mice and birds - even after us putting collars with bells on their necks (not to fond of this habit!).  Even so we have grown to love them. Any tips for us?   Heather

Answer
Hello Heather,

I think it's wonderful that you rescued these cats!  As you said, there is NO telling what kind of life they had before you took them to such a wonderful place.  I would be very patient and give them their space.   Did you know that when cats bring you dead animals, they are presenting you with a "gift"?  Their natural instinct is to hunt, and by killing these mice, birds, etc... they are showing you how proud they are of themselves... not to mention the instinct to bring home food to their loved ones.   I agree with you, I don't care much for that either, but please keep in mind that it is a "gift" from them and they are quite proud of themselves!

My guess is that they are skittish because they were once abused.  If you give them time and patience,  maybe they will become more affectionate over time.  They have to learn to trust you, and after being in an abusive situation , it takes time. Who knows?  Maybe someone would kick them everytime they came near, so they have learned to run from people.  There are numerous reasons that could be the answer , but I hope that you will continue to love these cats and give them the attention they deserve.  I think they probably think they died and went to cat heaven with the nice country life they now lead!

If it helps at all, I rescued a dog that was abused.  She stayed under my bed for three months before she would join the family.  I would have to force her out to "go potty" outside, but afterwards , she would run straight back under my bed.  I would leave food and water for her, and talk gently to her when I was in the bedroom.  One day, lo and behold, we were watching tv, when all of the sudden she appeared! We didn't dare breathe!! She has been a great pet ever since.  She is very protective of me,  but she is a very loving dog.   I never thought she would be such a sweet pet.  So, there is hope!!
God Bless,
Becky
