cat injury

Question
I know that you're not a veterinarian, but I thought you might have some tips about my cat's injury.  About three weeks ago, my cat Jasmine had an injury to her tail. We think a dog got her, and her tail was completely limp. We took her to the vet, and they told us that her tail was dead. It basically had been pulled away from her body enough to break it, and it is paralyzed. This also caused her to be unable to urinate on her own. We have been expressing her bladder a few times every day since then. She also is unable to go poop like before. It just falls out. From what I've read online the loss of bladder function is normal with this type of injury because the nerves are damaged. Some sites I have seen say that if function doesn't come back within a month it never will, and one said up to three or four months. She hasn't shown any improvement in that area. She has also been leaking urine a little bit for the last week or so. It seems like if she lays in certain positions it just sort of comes out. I dont know if that is a good or bad sign. Our vet doesn't have a lot of experience with this type of injury because she said most people with cats that have this problem give up after about a week and put the cat to sleep, so there's not a lot of cases to reference. Jasmine acts completely normal and happy. She plays and is just as sweet as ever, so she's not in pain or suffering and I can't imagine putting her to sleep. I saw a couple of postings on web forums that talked about cats with nerve damage in limbs, and people suggested Silicea 6x which is homeopathic to help heal the nerves.  Hypericum was also suggested to me. Do you know anything about that, or anything else to help her nerves along with the healing process? Also, I'm wondering what the signs of improvement are. How gradually does the function come back. Would the fact that she sometimes leaks urine be a sign of improvement, or the opposite? Sometimes she will also go into her litter box and just dig a little like she wants to go and get back out. I dont know if that means anything. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer
Well Ive looked into Silicea 6x and Hypericum, nowhere could i find information that they help nerve damage.
I wish i could tell you what to do, but ive never had to deal wtih this type of thing. I can, however, tell you what I would do. As long as my baby is happy and otherwise healthy i would continue to help her go potty and be happy she is still in my life. I would not put her to sleep until she is miserable or the vet says she has no quality of life. Sounds to me like your baby has a great quality of life and is very happy. I think the leakage just might be some nerve repair occuring. i could be way wrong on that though.

Im very sorry this has happened to sweet Jasmine. Just try to enjoy her, and continue to pamper her. Im sorry i couldnt help you more.
