Cat afraid of human

Question
I just adopted a 9 month old tiger cat mainly because I felt so sorry for her.  She is absolutely terrified of humans, however, gets along with my other cats.  I don't know her history - she could have been abused or just never been handled my humans.  What can I do to ease her into trusting me?

Thank you for your suggestion.

Answer
Beverly,

Wow, good for you for rescuing the 9 month old.  I am glad she and your other cats are getting along as this is generally a problem.  I am assuming she is spayed, because if not, it is time to make sure she is fixed!

There are a couple of things you will need with this young lady, patience and perseverance.  First off, let her make the first move, do not chase her, do not pick her up, just ignore her.  When she decides she wants to be with you, then make sure that, if you do make eye contact, you blink a lot.  Cats take a steady gaze as threatening behavior.

You will just have to wait until she feels she can trust you and is willing to warm up to you.  Trying to force the issue will only make her more frightened and unsure than she already is.

She may come around soon, or maybe not for many weeks or month, or, possibly, not at all.  You will just have to let her decide on her own.

Good luck and best regards... Norm.
