scabs on cats back

Question
I have a older inside cat that is pretty heavy.  Recently she has developed small sores or scabs on her back just above her tail.  She wants someone to scratch there or brush her there.  It seems to be itching her.  Maybe it's because she can't reach it herself to clean very well.
Any suggestions on what it is or causing it or how to cure it would be appreciated.
Thank-you,
Sally

Answer
Sally,

She seems to have developed some itchiness there, but why is the real question!?!?!.  There are a myriad of possible causes of this problem.  It could be from not being able to clean herself, it could be from fleas or mites, it could be a temporary allergic reaction to something.  I would suggest going to the vet to see if you can get to the root cause of the problem to get the correct treatment.

I would also reduce her food so she can lose some weight, which, in the long run, may also help.  When you do reduce the food, like people, the cat's metabolism will initially slow down to compensate, but, eventually, the weight will come off.

Please let me know what your vet says.

Best regards... Norm.
