sudden death explanation?

Question
We have seven cats and all are indoor and outdoor. We love them all but recently we lost our favorit (kitty) who was only 1 year. We saw her about 9:30 am and 1 hour later she was dead in our yard. At first I thought she was hit by a car and crawled to our yard but ther was only a little blood near her nose and my wife said she had a small hole on her tongue. I kew she was gone but we took her to the vet to make sure. Before we buried her we felt for bruise or broken bones but didn't find any. Did a lot of research and can't come up with anything but cardiac problems, insect bites or poisoning. My question is ,if she ate something poisonous does death happen within a hour or faster. Have you ever heard of styrofoam (saw tiny  pieces about 3 or 4 feet froom her)poisoning. Could she have had a seizure from this.? All of our cats are well taken care of and have all there shots.  Thank you so much for your time.

Answer
Jim,

I am so sorry for your loss.

I do not know if Styrofoam is poisonous for cats, but I would be concerned in case she was eating it!  There are so many substances and plants that are poisonous to cats, it could very well have been a toxin and, yes, some toxins are that quick.

The vet could have done a necropsy (including a tox screen) and ascertained the probable cause of death.  Anything else, at this point is speculation.  An insect or spider bite is usually not very quick unless the cat is allergic to such bites.

If she ingested a toxin, yes she could have had seizures.

I am sorry I cannot be of more help on this!!!!!

Best regards... Norm.
