Cat messing when stressed

Question
When ever there is a change in our 10 year old cats life she messes behind the sofa.  Is there anything we can put back there to discourage her from do it.  I clean it up when I smell it, but sometimes it is a day or two later and there is a large collection.  I know abour enzyme cleaners to nutralize the amonia smell, but that's not the problem.

One thing you can try is aluminum foil.  Cats really hate the feel of it.  Of course there are no guarantees.  Also, I would inspect the are every day to see if she is doing anything and try to ascertain what set her off.

I would put something back there as well, so that if she does go, it is easily cleanable, e.g. a plastic tray.

I suspect that if she has been doing this for years,it will be difficult to get her to stop.
