Question
Someone abandoned a little kitten about 4/5 wks old on my property. I have been giving it Kitten Supplement milk found at my grocer. He seems to be very active, playful, and eats on his own both the milk and kitten food I have put out for him. But, yesterday I noticed he is sneezing a lot. I don't see any green mucus around his eyes or nose and he doesn't seem to eat any less or be less active. I've never had cats before, I don't know the first thing about them (I just learned about kitty litter, I was putting it on newspaper until a freind brought me a litter box for it--amazing how they just know where to go and I just had to show him once!!) I'd like to keep this little guy but don't know if I would be a good mommy. I'm pretty nervous, I hope he survives with me. Anyway, I live in a very small town and the nearest vet is over 60 miles away. Is there something I can give him for the sneezing, is this a serious condition, should I have already taken him to the vet??? They have cat clinics here once a month and I did take him for his shots last week, could this be from the shots?

Answer
Well, most shots don't cause sneezing, but viral rhinotracheitis vaccination has sometimes been known to cause mild sneezing.  I don't know how good the formula is, I have always used KMR, but if he seems healthy then thats good.  A little sneezing is fine.  If it starts getting bad than I would take him to a vet, but otherwise he should be fine.  You sound like your doing pretty well for a first timer.  And don't worry.  Cats are one of the easiest animals to take care of.  Just try your best to keep his shots updated and he should be fine.  Good luck with him.
