Marble sized cyst? appears after female cat is spayed

Question
An 9 month old stray female cat adopted us this year.  We had her examined by vet in mid-February 2008.  No problems, NO bulges in abdomen area. We had her spayed three weeks ago.  Within the last few days we have noticed a marble sized cyst? or something has suddenly developed under her skin in the abdominal area near incision.  Is this a normal reaction or side effect?  What needs to be done? Is it safe to wait awhile and see if it goes away?

Answer
This could very likely be a reaction to the suture material used in the surgery.  Keep an eye on the area closely as you will want to be certain it is just inflammation not infection.  If the size of the abnormality increases or any pus-like substance is seen have her seen by your veterinarian as soon as possible.  A suture reaction can take several weeks to resolve, so it would not be surprising for it to take a while beyond the present time.

Best of luck to you and your feline friend.
