Baby mouse

Question
QUESTION: We found six baby mice in our car and the mother is nowhere to be found.  Unfortunately, five of the mice have already died and we have only one left.  We are trying to take care of him by ourselves as we are nowhere near a town.  We were feeding it warm milk but then read that they can't digest milk.  Now, we are feeding it warm sugar water and it seems to be more hydrated and looks better.  We are trying to keep it warm and are stimulating it to go to the bathroom, which seems to be working well.  What is the best thing to feed a baby mouse.  We don't have access to a town until Wednesday and hope to keep it alive.  Thank you so much for any help/advise you can give us.  We feel terrible that the other five died and are really doing our best to keep this one alive.

ANSWER: While I commend you for trying to save their little lives, it's pretty hard to do as you have found out. I don't know how old this baby is, ie; does it have fur, are it's eyes open yet?
You cannot continue feeding it sugar water and keep it alive. Mice nurse their babies with milk like any other mammal.

There is an old formula for babies that might work-but it's iffy at best.

It is one part evaporated milk(not whole real milk)
one part water
one half an egg yolk (raw, no white at all)
two teaspoons karo syrup (not sugar or honey)
mix this all together and feed slightly warm. You cannot heat it much as the egg will cook.
That is about the only thing you can do until you get some kitten milk replacer or even puppy replacer.

It has to be followed exactly- no substitutions.
The sad fact is that nature let's animals die that cannot make it without a mother. If she is alive she has already been bred and is going to have another litter in 20 days. That is all it takes. So while you can try, just be prepared for heartbreak with losing this one too.
I know, I have been through it more times that it is possible to count now.
Good luck and let me know if it makes it.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your advise.  Happily, the baby mouse made it through another day.  If it makes it through the night, we will go to town to buy the kitten milk replacer.  The baby is very little.  I think it is probably only 3 days old.  It doesn't have any fur and its eyes are still closed.  Its ears popped out today.  We do have one more question.  There is a white spot that looks like the mouse's stomach.  When we were feeding it milk, it got very white.  It still has some white in that spot.  Is this actually its stomach?  And, is the white spot good or bad?  We can't thank you enough for your help.  We will keep trying and will let you know what happens.  Thank you for volunteering to help.  Who  knows how many little lives you are saving everyday!

Answer
Yes that little white spot is his little tummy you are seeing through the skin. They are called pinkies at this age, and they are very helpless as you know. I am glad to hear he made it through the day.
Hopefully the formula will help the little guy. I guess you are getting it into him somehow or you wouldn't be seeing the white spot.

Just be careful about how much you feed him. His tummy is very tiny and not very strong to hold too much.
Thank you for the compliment too. It is the best part of being a vet tech. (saving lives that is)

Please keep me posted on his progress.
